NEW DELHI, June 11, 2026 \/debcubspark.com-DigiTIMES.\/ \u2014 Chintan Research Foundation (CRF) last evening launched its new book, Navigating the Climate Crisis: Perspectives and Actions from the Global South for Adaptation and Mitigation, bringing together perspectives on how countries of the Global South can address climate change while balancing development, equity, energy security and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The book, edited by Dr Debajit Palit, Dr Akanksha Jain and Mr Omkar Dhanke, brings together interdisciplinary perspectives and case studies across three broad themes: (i) global climate governance, equity and finance; (ii) energy transitions, mitigation pathways and industrial transformation; and (iii) adaptation, resilience, ecosystems and social dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The book was launched by H.E. Philip Green, High Commissioner of Australia to India; Dr Ajay Mathur, Professor of Public Policy, IIT Delhi and former Director General, International Solar Alliance; and Dr Prodipto Ghosh, Distinguished Fellow Emeritus, TERI and former Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change along with Shri Shishir Priyadarshi, President, CRF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While addressing the need for climate action, H.E. Philip Green highlighted Australia’s focus at the upcoming COP 31 as the Presidency for Negotiations, negotiating support for the Global South in accelerating the clean energy transition and improving access to finance, which are key areas of CRF\u2019s edited volume. He also reflected on the 3Rs mentioned in the book: Relevance in the Real world, Realism for the practitioners and Research by distinguished Researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Ajay Mathur, while commending the novel ideas put forward in the book, highlighted two areas of particular interest to him: the application of the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC) to technical task forces on adaptation, and the role of state-owned enterprises in anchoring adaptation within the development planning. He suggested that India take up these points at COP31 and lead the Global South conversation on both fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Prodipto Ghosh, drawing on his extensive experience in global climate policy, observed how the nature of climate discussions has evolved in the pre- and post-Paris Agreement periods \u2014 shifting from debates centred on the distribution of economic and strategic power between the Global North and South, to a post-Paris focus on the practical implementation of NDCs, which he noted as a considerably more constructive approach. Commenting on the book, he observed that it offers answers to practical and pragmatic questions in navigating the climate crisis, particularly on the issue of green finance. He noted that the public sector alone cannot mobilise resources at the scale required for adaptation, making it essential to structure adaptation finance in ways that are also commercially viable for the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shri Shishir Priyadarshi, in his Presidential address, reflected that the book is rooted in realism rather than idealism. He noted that while the emphasis in climate discourse is invariably placed on safeguarding the next generation, equal attention must be paid to the present generation, with efforts mobilised toward addressing the climate crisis today. He commended the efforts and ideas brought forth by the editors and the authors, noting their contributions in shaping a book that engages seriously with the practical realities of the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier the programme opened with a welcome address followed by an introduction to the book by\u00a0Dr Debajit Palit, Centre Head, Climate Change and Energy Transition, CRF and lead editor of the book. Dr. Palit highlighted the idea and motivation behind this book and shared that the dominant discourse on climate change continues to be shaped largely by Global North perspectives, which often overlook the developmental realities and priorities of developing economies. This edited volume, consisting of 22 chapters, is an attempt to shift the conversation and amplify Global South perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Akanksha Jain, Research Associate, CRF and co-editor presented the key takeaways from the book \u201cFrom Perspectives to Pathways for a Responsible Transition\u201d stating how the volume argues that for the Global South, climate change cannot be addressed in isolation from development challenges. Countries face differing levels of vulnerability, institutional capacity, resources and technological readiness, making context-specific approaches essential. The book therefore examines climate action through the interconnected lenses of mitigation, adaptation, development and justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The book seeks to contribute to the global climate discourse by placing\u00a0Global South perspectives, priorities and pathways at the centre of climate action, and by advancing a more integrated understanding of responsible and equitable transitions. It emphasises that there can be no single transition pathway for all countries. Instead, pathways must reflect national and regional realities while ensuring that climate action contributes to development and social equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
