Upon the retirement of Justice B.R. Gavai, the new Chief Justice of India Surya Kant formally took charge after the swearing-in ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan on November 24, 2025 (Monday) in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

According to an official government statement, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at Ganatantra Mandap at 10 a.m. in the august presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Taking to X, the PM said: “Attended the oath taking ceremony of Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Justice of India. Best wishes to him for his tenure ahead.”

Justice Surya Kant will continue as CJI until February 9, 2027.

Even as the Supreme Court prepares for a series of significant constitutional and administrative matters during his tenure, Justice Surya Kant’s elevation marks the latest transition in the country’s judiciary.
