Strengthening its commitment to improving road network in the North-eastern region, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRT&H), which overlooks the development of road connectivity in the region, reported construction of 16,207 km of National Highways in the North-eastern states, marking a remarkable milestone achievement as of April 1, 2025.
In the meanwhile, 12 major railway projects covering NER, including eight new lines and four doubling projects with a total length of 777 km haven been sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways.
The projects worth a total financial outlay of Rs. 69,342 crore, of which Rs. 41,676 crore has already been spent.
It might be mentioned that 278 km of railway lines have been commissioned so far, covering NER partly or fully.
The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), as part of rural connectivity, has sanctioned about 17,637 road projects, covering 89,436 km and 2,398 bridges in the region. So far, 16,469 roads, covering 80,933 km and 2,108 bridges have been completed.
The Government has initiated several connectivity projects as part of the Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) to bridge the digital divide.
The UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme has significantly improved air connectivity in the region. To be precise, 12 airports and heliports across the North-eastern states have been operationalised, including 90 air routes.
In addition, Central Sector Schemes such as NESIDS (Roads), NESIDS (OTRI), PM-DevINE, NEC schemes, and Special Development Packages are part of key development initiatives which are financed through the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (M-DoNER).
The Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE), which is funded 100% centrally, is aimed at funding infrastructure and social development projects in order to support livelihoods for women and youth, as well as to address critical development gaps along the lines of the vision of PM Gati-Shakti.
