Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s First Tempered Glass manufacturing plant in Noida
Optiemus Electronics and Corning Incorporated, USA have set up India’s first Tempered Glass Manufacturing Facility for Mobile Devices in Noida. Today (August 30, 2025) marks the start of the tempered glass factory with Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw gracing the occasion with his presence for the inauguration.
According to the Press Information Bureau, the Union Minister of MeitY – addressing the gathering – said that domestic manufacturing of tempered glass, one of the important accessories for mobile phones, is a crucial leap in the Make in India project as well as the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
At the inauguration ceremony of the facility, the Union Minister further said that India will soon boast as a manufacturer of chips, cover glasses, laptop, server components and all other components used in mobile phones, making India an important player in global electronics manufacturing.
Highlighting India’s journey towards self-reliance, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that India is expected to launch a Made in India chip soon.
Referring to India’s growth trajectory in electronics manufacturing, the union minister said over the last decade, India’s electronics manufacturing capability has grown six fold to touch a production value of Rs. 11.5 lakh crore, creating export value of Rs. 3 lakh crore and generating employment (direct & indirect) for about 2.5 million people, adding: “The country’s overall electronics ecosystem is growing rapidly with graded value addition ensured from time to time”.
India posted GDP growth rate of 7.8% in the First Quarter of FY 2025-26 which is reflective of the country’s “stable, vibrant and innovation-driven economy,” Press Information Bureau quoted Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as saying.
Underlining the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047, Minister Vaishnaw urged youths to play a contributory role towards its success as the world is looking at India with great expectations.
“This is a landmark moment for the Indian electronics manufacturing industry and the Make in India vision. Despite being one of the world’s largest mobile phone markets, India has relied on imports for tempered glass. With this initiative, we are looking at building global-scale capabilities to support the Indian and international markets with the best quality products. Our aspiration is that every Indian mobile phone user must use a Make in India tempered glass with BIS certification and fog marking to protect their screen,” PIB quoted Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman, Optiemus Infracom Limited as saying in the press release.
The tempered glass Noida facility is ready to produce super quality tempered glass under the global brand “Engineered by Corning”. The facility will cater to both domestic and global markets, worth approx. Rs. 20,000 crore and over $60 billion, respectively.
